In 2008 the government announced plans for all adults who used social care services (social services) to be able to plan their care using a ‘personal budget’. Personal budgets gave people more freedom to choose the support they wanted, but also passed over responsibility for lots of things that had previously been done by social workers. Now the government are extending the scheme to the NHS.

For the last few months, we've been talking to local people with experience of personal budgets. We've been asking people what works, and what could be improved. This event will introduce our report, and give people a chance to respond to it (free copies will be available).

One of the key needs to emerge was for a wider range of creative supports designed to meet people's individual needs. This was one of the original hopes for personal budgets. To help us think more about how we can make this happen we've invited a guest speaker, Angela Catley of Community Catalysts.

Community Catalysts have been working with personal budgets for over seven years, and have pioneered the development of 'micro-enyerprises'. Micro-enterprises are very small (typically less than 5 workers) local enterprises that provide a range of social and health care, supported, housing and leisure services. These include services that help people gain a new skill or make new friends, to lead a healthy life or enjoy a leisure activity. They are offered by a wide range of people and organisations in the community, including people who themselves need some support and family carers.

People are welcome to come for any or all of the day. Please let us know if you are coming and which workshops interest you through this page.
